When a foreigner decides to settle in Portugal, obtaining a Tax Identification Number (NIF) is the first step to take.
Without the NIF, you will not be able to open a bank account, buy/rent a property, buy a car, take out a subscription or sign an employment contract.
How to get it?
If you come from a European country:
Obtaining the NIF is quick and easy. You can apply for it at the offices of the tax authority – Autoridade Tributária – or at a Loja do Cidadão. The tax identification number is issued to you within the hour. We can help you with this process.
- A passport or personal identity card;
- Proof of residence from the country of origin (energy, water or internet bill);
If you are from outside the European Union:
For a resident of a country outside the European Union, Iceland or Norway, obtaining a TIN is done in a different way. In this case, these citizens need :
- A stamp obtained on entry to Portugal;
- A valid passport and a visa;
- Proof of residence in the country of origin;
- A fiscal representative;
- A document certifying the power of attorney granted to the fiscal representative.
